North Memorial’s Emergency Expertise is Open at the Blaine Medical CenterNorth Memorial, in partnership with Multicare Associates, has recently opened the North Memorial Urgency Center at Blaine Medical Center. The Urgency Center is similar to a fully-equipped emergency department staffed by physicians from North Memorial’s Level I Trauma Center and is the first of its kind in the Blaine area.
The Urgency Center possesses many of the capabilities found in hospital emergency rooms and can treat many of the same illnesses and injuries seen in them, including: chest pain, sports injuries, kidney stones, broken bones, cardiac arrest, pneumonia, abdominal pain, concussions, and more. When necessary, Urgency Center physicians will transfer patients to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale or other appropriate facilities.
"The Urgency Center allows us to treat almost every kind of emergency except those requiring transport by ambulance, such as cases of severe trauma," says Amy Kolar, M.D., Medical Director of North Memorial’s Emergency Department. "For many things that people traditionally go to the emergency room - joint dislocation, broken bones, abdominal or chest pain for example - they can now go to the Urgency Center instead."
Approximately three out of four people who go to hospital emergency departments in Minnesota do not end up being admitted to hospital, yet they may have to endure hours of waiting. According to Dr. Kolar: "By providing emergency services in an out-of-hospital setting, we are able to provide definitive care to a wide range of people at a lower cost, but with much added convenience and efficiency,"
In addition to providing high-level emergency care, the Urgency Center also provides services traditionally associated with urgent care, such as treatment of sore throats, ear infections and simple wounds. Urgent Care is provided by the Blaine Medical Center clinic, which is directly adjacent to the Urgency Center.
"This partnership is the best of both worlds for the residents of Blaine and surrounding areas," notes Matt Brandt, CEO, Multicare Associates. "We are providing world-class emergency room services, conveniently close to home and at a lower cost to the patient than if they went to a hospital emergency room."
The Urgency Center is open seven days a week, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
