MultiCare Rheumatology
A Rheumatologist is an internist or pediatrician, who received further training in the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal disease including osteoporosis and systemic autoimmune conditions commonly referred to as rheumatic diseases. These diseases can affect the joints, muscles and bones causing pain, swelling, stiffness and deformity.

RHEUMATOLOGISTS treat autoimmune conditions that occur when the immune system sends inflammation to areas of the body when it is not needed causing damage/symptoms. These diseases can also affect the eyes, skin, nervous system and internal organs. These specialists also treat joint disease similar to orthopedists but do not perform surgeries.

Common diseases treated or managed by rheumatologists include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, autoimmune conditions, chronic back pain, tendinitis, gout, lupus, pagets, fibromyalgia, psoriatic arthropathy, juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), uveitis, psoriasis, neuropathy, and scleroderma.

You should see a Rheumatologist when you experience muscle and joint pain that persists longer than 6 weeks. Typically a Family Physician is seen for the first evaluation. If there is concern for an underlying rheumatic condition, you will be referred to a Rheumatologist for evaluation.

If you have relatives with autoimmune or rheumatic disease you should not delay in making an appointment. Joint damage can occur if the symptoms of joint pain are ignored or not treated properly over a period of time. This damage cannot always be reversed and may be permanent.

Rheumatic diseases are sometimes complex in nature and difficult to diagnose, so your Rheumatologist will gather a complete medical history and perform a physical exam to look for signs and symptoms of inflammation throughout the entire body and musculoskeletal system. A family history can be very important to diagnosis of rheumatic disease and will also be assessed.
